5 Ways to Keep to your Workout Resolutions in the New Year!
The new year is upon us, and with it comes our sincere efforts to change habits for the better. Before committing to anything like ‘Workout & Get into Great Shape in the New Year’, let’s break down what it really means to keep to that resolution.
Below is my quick list of ways to help you find and commit to a program that makes a difference in your body and your health AND will keep you going thru 2024. Hope you find them helpful!
1) Learn about your unique body challenges!
Rather than creating a generalized goal like ‘I want to get into better shape’, take a moment to think about specific personal challenges you’ve experienced in past workouts.. now grab a pen and write these issues down.
Are your legs, ankles, knees or arms weak? Do you struggle with bad posture and back pain? Or maybe you’ve had surgery (ies) and are still recuperating. Identifying your challenges is a best first step to begin. Respecting your body challenges and goals in mind will lead you to the right kind of workout, and one that serves your personal needs best.
Pause-- If figuring out what’s weak and tight seems confusing, you may want to speak with the instructor who can help you identify your weaknesses, so that you can work out with a specific goal in mind. Knowing your specific goal(s) will lead you in the right direction, and a knowledgeable instructor will help you discover these specific issues.
2) Commit to a workout that feels enjoyable and safe.
Arduous and aggressive workouts that push you through high intensity moves claiming fast results, may be appealing at first, but rarely stay appealing after a few weeks. If the workout is too forceful, painful, or just plain unenjoyable—listen to your body--- this is not a workout that you’ll stick to.
Do the workout goals of this program align with your goals and your needs? If the program adheres to your goals but the movement feels brutal, uncomfortable or causes pain before, during or afterward, this isn’t a good match even if the goals sound good. This may seem obvious, but YOUR fun and enjoyment count. And if you’re not having a good time, you’re never going to keep to this workout through December 2024!
3) Choose a holistic rebalancing workout.
By holistic, I mean working and rebalancing ALL of the body’s 650 muscles safely. When exercise programs overemphasize ab work or weight lifting, check to see if they rebalance these muscles equally through release, relaxation and stretching. This is key if you don’t want overworked, strained or torn muscles. A well-balanced program like Essentrics uses PNF stretching which increases ROM (range of motion) by safely increasing the length of the muscle. And..
4) Make it a consistent habit.
Once you’ve discovered a workout that feels good, safe and enjoyable to your body, find a way to commit to it consistently. Post the class dates on your calendar for the entire year and work your schedule around this commitment. If the class only meets once a week, you might consider private session(s) with the instructor to focus on your goals or help you create a personalized exercise plan.
5) Monitor your progress and your success!
Keep a journal, and write down your challenges and successes so you can monitor your progress, this will also keep you motivated. 🥰 When you find yourself progressing.. getting more flexible, feeling stronger, more mobile or losing weight, even if the progress may seem small or slow, be sure to celebrate your success!
